BSD Courses- what is going on?

Postby simonwheeler » Sat Feb 10, 2018 8:50 pm

Does anyone know what's going on with BSD courses?
This on their "Courses" section of the website

To me it doesn't seem a "good plan" to apparently abandon existing courses without being able to advertise replacements that are available.
As a member it's courses that interest me- and this Forum, of course! As far as the Journal is concerned I can take it or leave it. So I am starting to doubt why I should renew my membership.....

It's not just the courses, Simon. All the registered tutors have been told that they can no longer run 'BSD-approved' courses, and the tutor register has been dissolved pending launch of the yet-to-be-announced new courses. Seems a bit 'baby and bathwater' to me, but we'll just have to wait and see what the new plan is.

Courses
I was fortunate enough to be able to go on two courses last year and thoroughly enjoyed both of them. Let's hope things improve there as I would like to keep the momentum going and do another this year.
I wonder if they will keep the continuity so you will be able to carry on from your last course?
If it's changed too much it could end up being a right pigs ear!

Tutors
I think another important point here is that anyone now looking for a tutor or their contact details now has nothing to go on, as for saying contact the office, don't they have enough to do?
There is also the fact that tutors pay an annual fee to go on the list and they are now getting nothing back for it and possibly causing them to lose work as there is no link to their website either.
Why are tutors are not allowed to run BSD approved courses now, could this be because the BSD wants to hold on to more of the course fees?
The tutors are one of the BSDs best assets and I think this will encourage more to start running their own courses effectively taking funds out of the BSDs pocket if this is not carefully thought through.
As Grahame says, common sense would say that you would have things in place before just wiping part of a website out, it beggars belief!
I sincerely hope whoever sanctioned this learns something from it.

Surely if you are going to put measures in place that will have an effect on the tutors it would be courteous to consult with them first, you may even get a solution to your problems, after all they are all members as well.

Having said all that, I hope it all works out ok

Totally agree...which is why I posted the question.
Sad.

And this is downright iniquitous.

Actually, tutors have not been charged the annual fee this year.

As an educational charity, the Society is duty-bound by its constitution to maintain a register of active tutors, so we can only hope that they get this situation sorted out ASAP.

This post also reminds me that I haven't posted my courses for this year yet, so here are my [formerly BSD-approved courses] for 2018.

As this Forum is part of the BSD "family", I would hope that somebody...preferably including the person responsible for this decision...would monitor these posts and respond asap in order to explain what the story is.
If not, it seems to me to be putting admin here in an invidious position. (Sorry Grahame!)
